At the start of this project, although a regular user of the Internet, I had little idea about how websites actually worked or were programmed. I had heard of HTML, and to be quite frank that was about the limit of my knowledge. I accept that to an expert, the efforts that you now see some months later may seem a very rustic. However I must say that the eventual outcome is exactly as I imagined and, personally, I'm quite pleased with the end result.
As in all of these projects I believe in standing up and acknowledging the assistance and support that has been given to me to ensure the site's eventual birth.
Firstly I must acknowledge the assistance, support and above all unending patience afforded me during the gestation of this website by Mrs Grumpy. At the end of the day, it was actually her idea that spawned the whole project.
Secondly, I spent some time looking through many books in the library and concluded that they were all pretty useless. One thing that they did however suggest was that one of the quickest and easiest ways to launch a website was to use a template that you could purchase from specialist online shops. You then filled in the template with your website. I spent some time trawling through these and, having in my mind exactly what I wanted, came to the conclusion that the majority of the templates were much of a muchness and not very suitable for my needs. Being a DIY man and Electronics Engineer, to do it myself seemed to be the obvious way forward. A quick consultation with Amazon book reviews suggested that one book entitled "HTML and CSS, Design and Build Websites" by Jon Duckett was, at the time, pretty good. Having purchased it, I have indeed found it most excellent. It has become my bible in the detail coding of this website. My copy is now very dog-eared through regular and frequent use. I cannot recommend the book more highly to a beginner.
Next I would like to acknowledge that the cartoon of Grumpy used on the website was purchased from 'dreamstime.com'. They have a smashing and varied selection of pictures you can economically download and use for virtually whatever purpose you wish.
Fourthly, as the website contains a large volume of written material, I decided that it would be a good idea to make it as dyslexia friendly as possible. To that end I contacted "The Dyslexia Association of Ireland" and received much encouragement, support and detailed information on such matters as the colour schemes, font sizes and styles that you now see in the presentation of the website.
Finally, I cannot close this short acknowledgement section without making reference to GoDaddy, my Internet Service Provider. Their technical support team has been most supportive and again patient, particularly in the final stages of getting the initial load of the website up on the server. As an indication of that dedication, over a two day period, I spent nearly five hours on the telephone to them and through our mutual perseverance we did actually get there and what you see is the end result.
Thank you everybody.
