(Big) Business is a fact of life today, we must ensure that 'they' do not ride roughshod over us all in their pursuit of profit

Business 8....Money Rules....

After writing eco-14 (misuse of drugs) I realised there was a theme, common with eco-12 (plastics). Further thought suggested a number of other grumps were also driven by the same theme.

The common factor is money. It is a fact that the total turnover or "gross domestic product" of the United States pharmaceutical industry is greater than .....read more.....

Business 7; Laptop Rechargeable Battery pricing

I have just replaced the battery on my laptop. It appears I was optimistic in expecting it to last longer than four years. This surprised me since I've used it predominantly with the mains plugged in. Consequently, doing some research I found that it is recommended that laptop batteries should be used rather than left permanently on float charge. (A fact not openly publicised by battery/laptop computer manufacturers) This means that if you aren't travelling with your laptop but use it mostly at home on mains, you should also use it solely on the internal battery on a regular basis. Running it though doesn't do any harm or cause any problems, provided of course you have the charging point available. While waiting for my new battery to be delivered I tried this recommendation and when the battery was low a message popped up saying "your battery is low: connect charger". This facility gives .....read more.....

Business 6; A tale of a washing machine. On the surface, a pat on the back, but read on, all was not is as it should be

Just over two years ago our washing machine eventually died and went to the great big launderette in the sky. It had reached the stage where we were having a job drying the towels we had used to soak up the drips! The end came when there was a veritable flood in the kitchen and Mrs Grumpy and I, after a quick investigation found the drum was rotten, and decided enough was enough. (And perhaps had been for a number of months!). I suppose we ought to be thankful it had lasted as long as it had as it seemed to be in use almost daily since we'd had it.

A quick look at the Internet and a peek at the Which reports on washing machines showed that Bosch came up trumps as the 'best buy' .....read more.....

Business 5; Satellite Television Woes

When we see two elderly spacecraft still working, namely Voyager (launched in nineteen seventy-seven and now some 20,000 million Km from earth) and a much younger sprite called Rosetta (launched in two thousand and four) is it not surprising that I get very annoyed when the satellite television system purchased two years ago has been nothing but a pain in the butt ever since it was installed.

I had to arrange at least four callouts in the first year. Fortunately these were covered financially by warranty but in some cases it was over two weeks .....read more.....

Business 4; A background to computers, what they can actually do and what they cannot do as against what people, especially call centres, expect of them!

Nowadays we all use them in every walk of life. In fact, to read this you must be utilising some form of computer.

All of us seem to exhibit an implicit, almost blind trust in our computers these days. We believe totally in the information they supply to us. Grumpy believes this is exceedingly dangerous. He can almost hear you saying what the hell does he know about computers? Let me explain, for the whole of his working life Grumpy has been involved with computers in one form or another. Most of his work was involved in the hardware (electronic chips, bits and power supplies) as opposed to the software (programming) .....read more.....

Business 3; What the eighty twenty rule is and how Mangement use it in all manner of situations

This rule has been one of the most fundamental concepts ever discussed on management courses, and frequently quoted by business management in business planning. In a roundabout way it is frequently used in the justification of cost saving exercises.

I must admit this is not really a grump, but it occurred to me that, of those currently planned, many are influenced or caused by the inept and rigid application of this eighty-twenty rule. The rule is so fundamental that it must have been around for donkeys yonks, which is why I .....read more.....

Business 2; Do you find that you go round and round in circles on some Websites or can never find what you want?

I daresay that many of you will have plenty to say about my website when you read my views on other people's sites, so before you clever dicks start, touché.

I recently got extremely frustrated when trying to find, via the internet, additional information on a product I had recently purchased. Frequently, these days, product documentation supplied with an item is at best generally poor, confusing or just plain non-existent.

As an example of this, I recently purchased a one .....read more.....

Business 1; Fed up with being forced to do business by telephone?

Increasingly we are faced with no alternative but to do business over the telephone. Grumpy finds the large number of businesses who do this absolutely appalling. What I think is even worse is that most of them seem to record telephone conversations. They claim this is for "training purposes". But I am sure that should it come to a legal argument over what was said (and so nothing to do with training), they would be the first to consult their recordings. The customer, that is you and I .....read more.....
